As a photographer I am always wondering how much we all copy from others and then disguise under the banner of emulation or just gaining some creative direction.

Take this image for example, shot very quickly in the studio last night. We have all seen similar shots a multitude of times, so it is hard to say there is anything unique about it. Yet it is totally original, from the styling to the lighting, and even the post processing.

But dig under the surface and you have a pose that was an ’emulation’ from a Pinterest image, a lighting set-up that was ‘inspired’ by a good friend (single umbrella / feathered), and post processing that was a combination of tips taken from online blogs.

When do we cross the line in to frowned upon plagerism, rather than encouraged emulation?

Would love to know your thoughts.
